The people, process, technology (PPT) framework has been around since the early 1960s and these days, most software companies use the framework for information technology management. Successful implementation of Business Intelligence (BI) requires more than just a technology platform though and there is more to BI than just the software.
As standalone components, people, process, and technology are necessary for organizational transformation and management. The PPT framework is all about how the three elements interact. The people do the work. Processes make this work more efficient. Technology helps people do their tasks and also helps automate the processes.
A good way to describe the framework is to think of it as a three-legged chair. If one of the legs is a bit longer or shorter, the whole chair will wobble. Similarly, if the technology changes, you need to modify the people and processes to adapt to the new tools. For example, many businesses throw new technology and tools at their problems. However, technology is only as effective as the processes utilising it and the people who handle it.
The People are those who do the work. You might say this is the most important part of the framework as without people, nothing can happen.
The Process part is the series of actions, tasks or steps that need to happen in order to achieve a particular goal. People are ineffective without processes in place to support their decisions.
Technology alone does not solve problems. Technology will not make existing problems go away without the people and processes around to support it. Too often, companies make an investment in technology and then try to fit the people and processes around it.
Business transformation strategies often focus on technology and processes, while ignoring the people involved. It’s vital to get the buy-in you need by involving the people outside of management in the decision-making processes and working toward continuous improvement.
If you’ve already implemented the PPT framework and your organisation is still not satisfied with the speed of work (or you aren’t seeing results fast enough), the problem might lie in your automation efforts. If efficiency is your problem, you might not be scaling enough with the interaction of people and the processes they complete. If you are not generating enough new value, more innovation might help.
